A yellow hard hat at the altar. Heavy chains criss-crossing a crucifix. A congregation looking on. An unusual church clip is circulating online as users link it to the death of a priest struck by a falling cross in Ecuador.
The footage appears to show a priest in green vestments raising a communion host beneath the secured religious figure. Filmed from behind worshippers, the scene has been shared with captions suggesting churches are taking extra precautions following the tragedy.
However, JAM Radio has not independently established where or when the clip was made, identified its original creator, or verified whether it has been digitally altered. The footage does not establish that churches have introduced a wider policy of chaining crucifixes or wearing protective helmets.
Mexican outlet Grupo Marmor has also reported on the clip, describing it as an online humorous response to incidents involving falling religious structures. That account does not independently authenticate the scene.
The tragedy behind the captions
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died on Saturday 17 October while celebrating Mass at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro church in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
A large crucifix fell from the wall behind the altar and struck him during the service, which was being livestreamed. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death and expressed condolences to his relatives, friends and Redemptorist community.
His name has been misstated in some captions accompanying the separate hard-hat clip, including the post supplied to JAM Radio. The priest who died was Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari.
What is known about safety checks?
In a report published on 19 October, Ecuadorian outlet Primicias said the archdiocese was awaiting a specialist technical report into the falling cross.
The archdiocese told the outlet that its parishes carry out maintenance with support from a technical department. At that point, it had not specified whether extraordinary inspections would follow.
The fatal accident is documented. The separate clip featuring the hard hat and chains remains unverified, and claims that it demonstrates a general change in church safety practices have not been established.
