Jamaican DJ Kovert, whose real name was Matthew Nelson, has died at 19 following a road crash, according to the Jamaica Observer.

The newspaper reported on Sunday that Nelson died in hospital on Saturday, 24 October, after a crash a few days earlier on Washington Boulevard in St Andrew. It identified him as a former Ardenne High student and a first-year management studies student at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Fellow DJs including Russ Buss and Zacky shared tributes, the Observer reported.

From school competitions to Kingston events

Kovert’s public Instagram profile includes a pinned St Mary’s post celebrating his victory in the 2024 SunCity High School DJ Competition, alongside his parents. The profile also documents his performance and promotional work.

In an August interview with the Observer, Nelson described building on experience organising school socials to move into public event promotion.

He co-promoted FWD with Dominic Bartley at Dulce Lounge in Barbican. The bi-weekly summer series was aimed at young adults, with each staging designed around a different theme.

Nelson spoke about wanting more support for emerging promoters, including better partnerships with venues and sponsors and more opportunities to develop sustainable events.
