Cookies and similar technologies

What this page covers
Cookies are small files that a website puts on your device. Websites can also keep small pieces of information in your browser, known as local storage. This page explains what JAM Radio News uses, and what other companies may use when you load their content through our site. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal information.
What we use ourselves
We use only what the site needs to work and to remember your choices. None of it is used to track you or to show you targeted adverts.
- Colour theme. If you choose a light or dark theme, your browser stores that choice so the site looks the way you want next time. It stays on your device.
- Sign-up prompts. If you subscribe, or close a sign-up prompt, your browser remembers that on your device so we do not keep asking.
- Radio player. The radio player remembers, in your browser, that it was playing so that it can offer to resume after a page refresh, and so that the pop-out player and the main page do not play at the same time.
- Alerts on your device. If you choose to receive browser alerts from us, your browser installs a small background helper (a service worker) so alerts can reach you even when the site is closed. You can remove it in your browser settings.
- Staff sign-in. People who work on the site use a sign-in to reach our Studio. This is needed to keep them signed in. Readers do not need to sign in.
What we do not use ourselves
We do not use cookies or similar storage for analytics tracking or for advertising. We serve our own adverts, and we count impressions and clicks as totals only. We do not use advertising network cookies, reader IDs or fingerprinting. Story view counts are totals for each story, not records of individual readers.
Our service providers
Cloudflare sits in front of the site to speed it up and protect it from attacks and bots. It may set a strictly necessary security cookie for that purpose.
Other companies' content on our pages
Some things on our pages come from other companies. They have their own cookie and privacy practices, which we do not control.
- Listening to our radio. When you tap Listen live, your device connects to RadioKing, our radio streaming provider, which can use its own technical identifiers. The cover pictures shown with the song come from RadioKing's servers.
- Embedded videos, audio and posts. Some stories include items from services such as YouTube, X, Facebook, GoFundMe, Vimeo, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts or Mixcloud. When such an item loads, or when you press play, that service may set its own cookies and collect information about you.
- Google "Add to Preferred Sources". On story pages, the button is loaded from Google (news.google.com). Google may use cookies or similar technology for it.
- Affiliate and advertiser links. If you click an affiliate link (we use Admitad) or one of our adverts, the site you land on may set cookies to record that you came from us.
Please check those companies' own cookie and privacy information. You can also choose not to press play on an embed or not to click a link.
The JamRadio app
The app does not use browser cookies. It stores a device token for alerts and some settings on your device. You can clear the app's storage or turn off alerts in your device settings. The privacy policy explains what the app sends us.
How to clear or block cookies
You can clear or block cookies and local storage in your browser settings. Each browser does this slightly differently, so search your browser's help pages for "clear site data". If you clear them, the site will go back to its default colour theme and may show sign-up prompts again. Blocking them will not stop you reading our stories.
If this changes
If we add analytics, advertising or anything else that is not strictly necessary, we will update this page first. Where the law requires, we will ask for your consent before we use it, and you will be able to say no.
