In a powerful moment that puts community ahead of celebrity, global music stars Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland have reunited in their hometown of Houston, Texas, to celebrate the opening of a new housing development designed to support people experiencing homelessness.
The Knowles-Rowland House officially opened on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, bringing a long-standing community initiative into a new chapter. The three-storey development features 31 apartments and is designed to provide residents with more than temporary shelter: it aims to offer stability, practical support and a pathway towards rebuilding their lives.
The project, valued at $13.96 million (approximately £10.4 million), stands on the former site of the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, which was destroyed by fire in 2021. Its reopening represents a significant milestone for a project rooted in the families’ longstanding connection to their community.
The new facility is designed to provide permanent supportive housing, alongside services intended to help residents address challenges that can make it difficult to secure and maintain a home.
These include mental health counselling, substance-use treatment, life-skills training and access to fresh and shelf-stable food.
Residents are expected to begin moving into their new homes on 1 November.
The approach recognises that homelessness is not simply about lacking a roof. For some people, finding a lasting way out can also require access to support, essential services and the opportunity to regain independence.
By combining housing with practical assistance, the Knowles-Rowland House aims to provide residents with a stronger foundation for the future.

For Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, the opening carries a personal significance that stretches far beyond their international success.
The pair rose to global fame as members of Destiny’s Child, one of the most successful girl groups of their generation. Yet their connection to the project reaches back to their earlier years in Houston.
In 2002, Beyoncé, her mother Tina Knowles and Rowland contributed $1.5 million towards establishing the original Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, demonstrating a commitment to community support long before the latest development opened.
The centre was created to serve young people, and its destruction in a fire in 2021 marked a painful interruption to that legacy.
The new housing development brings the Knowles-Rowland name back to the same site, this time with a focus on people experiencing homelessness and the support they need to move forward.
Beyoncé made a surprise appearance at the opening alongside Rowland, her mother Tina Knowles and her daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter.
The ceremony was also attended by local officials and community figures, underlining the wider significance of the development for Houston. Speaking at St John’s Downtown, where the opening event took place, Beyoncé reflected on her personal connection to the church and the role it played in her upbringing.
She described it as a foundation in her life and expressed gratitude for the people whose support had helped shape her journey. Tina Knowles also became emotional as she reflected on the values she had sought to instil in the young women, including empathy and giving back to others.
Her words captured the family significance of the occasion: a project linked to the past, rebuilt after tragedy and now intended to support people facing difficult circumstances.

In 2013, she launched BeyGOOD, an initiative that supports communities through partnerships and programmes involving employment, housing, food, clothing, counselling and medical assistance.
Her charitable work in Houston also included support for people affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. During the COVID-19 pandemic, initiatives associated with BeyGOOD helped provide food and other essential assistance to local residents.
The Knowles-Rowland House reflects a similar emphasis on practical help, with housing placed at the centre of the development.
For Rowland and Beyoncé, the project also highlights a relationship that has endured beyond their years performing together in Destiny’s Child.
The opening is an important milestone, but its lasting success will ultimately be measured by the people it helps. With 31 apartments and support services planned for residents, the development offers a tangible response to homelessness in Houston. The next challenge will be ensuring that residents receive the consistent assistance needed to maintain their homes and build more secure futures.
The project does not solve homelessness across the city. However, it creates a dedicated place where people can access housing alongside services intended to help them regain stability.

At a time when homelessness remains a serious challenge for communities around the world, the Knowles-Rowland House sends a powerful message: success means more when it creates opportunities for others.
For Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, this is more than a celebrity appearance or a grand opening. It is a return to their roots and a continuation of a community commitment that began more than two decades ago.
And for the people who will soon move through its doors, the most important story may be a much quieter one: the chance to have a home, access support and begin again.
