A 40-year-old man has been shot dead in west London as people gathered for a memorial service, the Metropolitan Police has said. A murder investigation is under way.
Officers were called shortly before 7.50pm on Friday after members of the public reported hearing multiple shots in East Acton. The man was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service but died there, police said.
The shooting happened at the junction of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street. According to the Met, between 40 and 50 people, including children, were at the gathering when it took place.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie said the man's life had been taken in "a senseless act of violence", and that what should have been a time for remembrance had left a family devastated.
Police appeal for witnesses
No arrests have been made, and a police cordon remains in place in Braybrook Street. The victim's family have been told and are being supported by specialist officers, the Met said.
DCI Howie said: "Someone knows what happened and we need them to come forward." Police want to hear from anyone who was in the area of Erconwald Street, Braybrook Street, the surrounding roads or the Wormwood Scrubs playground between 6pm and 8pm, in particular anyone who saw a person carrying or hiding a weapon, people on bicycles acting suspiciously, or vehicles being driven at speed.
Officers are also asking for photographs, video, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage, or anything relevant seen on social media, however small it may seem.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
