A devastating tragedy has struck the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar after the roof of a private school collapsed during school hours, killing at least 35 people, including children and a female teacher.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 15 October 2026, at the Al-Khair Education Center, where students were reportedly attending classes when the structure gave way. According to reports from Anadolu Agency, the collapse began when an upper-floor roof fell onto the roof below, causing it to cave in on pupils inside their classrooms.

The majority of the children killed were reportedly under the age of 13, making the disaster particularly heartbreaking for families and the wider community. Lady Reading Hospital reported that 20 children had been injured, while emergency responders worked to rescue those caught beneath the rubble. Rescue 1122 officials said 47 children had been pulled from the debris and transported to hospitals.

Authorities reported that the rescue operation was nearing completion, with approximately 95% of the debris cleared at the time of the report. Search efforts were continuing as officials worked to establish whether anyone remained trapped.

In a significant development, Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Mian Saeed confirmed that the school's owner had been arrested following the collapse. The arrest comes as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the disaster and seek to establish what caused the building to fail.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about building safety, construction standards and the enforcement of regulations intended to protect children in educational facilities. Anadolu Agency also reported that 14 children died in a separate roof collapse at a private tuition centre in Lahore in June, highlighting the devastating consequences of structural failures in places where children should be safe.

For parents who send their children to school each morning expecting them to return home safely, the loss is unimaginable. Schools are meant to provide an environment where young people can learn, develop and build their futures — not places where families must fear for their lives.

As investigations continue, questions remain about the condition of the building, whether appropriate safety standards were met and whether warning signs could have been identified before the collapse.

The priority now remains supporting the injured, providing answers to grieving families and establishing accountability where wrongdoing is proven. The investigation will be crucial in determining the cause of the collapse and whether measures could have prevented this devastating loss of life.

The tragedy in Peshawar is a sobering reminder that structural safety is not a luxury or an administrative formality. It is a fundamental responsibility, particularly when the lives of children are at stake.
