Global internet chaos as Cloudflare outage knocks out major platforms — officials stress no cyber attack, but millions left offline.
Millions of internet users across the UK and worldwide were left frustrated today after a major outage at Cloudflare, one of the world’s largest internet infrastructure providers, caused widespread disruption.
Websites including X (Twitter), Letterboxd, and countless smaller platforms relying on Cloudflare’s services were hit by downtime, sparking fears of a possible cyber attack. However, Cloudflare has confirmed the incident was the result of a technical fault, not a coordinated attack.
The outage began earlier in the day, coinciding with scheduled maintenance at Cloudflare’s Santiago datacenter. The disruption spread far beyond expectations, with reports suggesting up to 20% of the UK’s internet traffic was affected at its peak.
Cloudflare, which provides DDoS protection and routing services for millions of websites, said engineers were working urgently to reroute traffic and restore normal service. The company stressed that no data breach had occurred and that the issue was purely operational.
The incident highlights the fragile dependence of the modern internet on a handful of infrastructure providers. When one of these networks fails, the ripple effect can take down vast portions of the web, from social media platforms to business services.
Users across the UK reported difficulties accessing news sites, entertainment platforms, and even online banking services. While many services are now coming back online, intermittent issues are expected to continue until Cloudflare fully stabilises its systems.
JamRadio UK will continue to monitor the situation and bring updates as they develop.
