Mediterranean Sea — Climate activist Greta Thunberg was allegedly mistreated by Israeli forces during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, according to reports from Turkish journalist Ayşe Karaca, who was embedded aboard one of the vessels. The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, was intercepted in international waters by Israeli naval units early Friday morning.

Thunberg, who was aboard the Handala, was reportedly dragged by her hair and shoved during the raid, though Israeli officials deny any abuse and claim she is “safe and healthy.” Footage released by activists shows Thunberg surrounded by armed soldiers, seated calmly but visibly detained.

According to a Swedish official cited by The Guardian, Greta Thunberg told embassy staff she was held in an Israeli prison cell infested with bedbugs, receiving insufficient food and water, and suffering from dehydration and skin rashes.

The flotilla included over 40 boats, carrying aid and prominent figures such as Mandla Mandela, Ada Colau, and Irish senator Chris Andrews. Organizers say the mission was peaceful and aimed at breaking the blockade on Gaza to deliver medical supplies and food.

 Israel’s Response

Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the interception, stating the flotilla posed a “security threat” and violated the naval blockade. All activists aboard are expected to be deported.

Protests erupted in Istanbul, Berlin, Naples, and London within hours of the raid. Human rights groups condemned the operation by Israeli forces as a violation of international law and a brazen assault on humanitarian activists. The hashtag #FreeGreta is trending globally, with over 100K posts in 24 hours.

Amnesty International issued a statement calling the raid “a disgraceful act of aggression against peaceful dissent.”
