Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his iconic role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54 in an apparent drowning while on vacation in Costa Rica.

Warner’s death was first reported by TMZ and later confirmed by multiple outlets including People and Variety. Details remain limited, but sources indicate the incident occurred during a family swim. He is survived by his wife and daughter, whose identities he kept private throughout his career.

A Legacy in Television

Warner rose to fame in the 1980s as the only son of Cliff Huxtable, played by Bill Cosby, in the groundbreaking NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. He starred in all eight seasons from 1984 to 1992, earning an Emmy nomination and becoming a household name.

His career spanned decades, with notable roles in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, The Resident, and 9-1-1. He also voiced The Producer in The Magic School Bus and directed episodes of Kenan & Kel and All That.

In 2015, Warner won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance alongside Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway for the song “Jesus Children.”

Fans and fellow actors have begun sharing tributes online, celebrating Warner’s contributions to Black television and his quiet but powerful presence in the entertainment industry. His final podcast episode, Not All Hood, was released just days before his death.
