BREAKING: British Teenager Released from Dubai Prison After Royal Pardon

Jam Radio Newsdesk

Marcus Fakana, 19, from Tottenham, North London, has been released from prison in Dubai after receiving a royal pardon. Fakana had been sentenced to one year in jail for having a relationship with a 17-year-old girl—an offence under UAE law, despite being legal in the UK.

He was arrested in August 2024 while on holiday with his family, after the girl’s mother reported the relationship to Dubai authorities. Fakana’s case drew widespread attention and criticism, with campaigners warning of the risks British nationals face under the UAE’s strict morality laws.

The advocacy group Detained in Dubai confirmed his release today, stating that Fakana had endured severe mental distress during his detention at Al Awir prison. The pardon was granted by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum following a public plea for clemency.

Fakana has now returned to the UK and is recovering at home with his family. The FCDO has been contacted for comment.
