If Your Parent Was Born in the UK

You may already be a British citizen if:

• You were born outside the UK after 1983, and
• One of your parents was born in the UK or was a British citizen “otherwise than by descent” (e.g. naturalized or born in the UK).

If you meet these criteria, you might be eligible to apply directly for a British passport—no need to “apply for citizenship” first.

If your parent was British but you weren’t automatically granted citizenship at birth, you may still be able to register as a British citizen. This is especially true if:

• You’ve lived in the UK for a period of time,
• You were born before 1983 and your mother was British (maternal claims were restricted before 1981 reforms),
• Or your parent was in Crown service or the armed forces.
• Your British father was not married to your non-British mother.

If Your Parent Was Born in a British Overseas Territory

The UK still maintains 14 overseas territories, including:

• Anguilla
• Bermuda
• Gibraltar

• Cayman Islands
• Turks and Caicos
